Over at the LovingMixedMedia group, Gary is hosting monthly techniques and this month he demonstrated a technique using bitumen (asphalt/tar). I used Chinese Sumi Ink and got close to the same results without the smell! Here is a photo of the first few steps. I'll share more pics soon.
If you are interested in learning from some super friendly and welcoming artists, join the main ning and look for the challenge group to join as well. Everyone is very helpful and encouraging. I hope to see you there, as I pop in occasionally!

I love this piece, Cindy! It's calming.
I love your painting. It has a peaceful feel to it.
AHhhhhh my style of art with beautiful koi.
I get it...this is one of the steps, not the finished product! I still like it! I am excited to learn from Gary, but I would like to see how yours turns out with the different medium.
I get it now...this is just one of the steps. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out with the Chinese sumi ink. I am excited to learn from Gary, as well!! (I still like the painting, though.)
Fantastic! I love those fish over the floating squares. Great color choices too!
Well I had to start over again and repainted the whole thing out. I wasn't happy with the stencil I used for one of the other steps. I covered too much of the painting with it and I lost the fish under it. The fish are the focal point so I don't want to hide them, just a little maybe! I'll be working on this again soon and will share pics.
I love this! living in Japan as a teen I love anything with Koi. Looking forward to seeing your non-smelly bitumen technique :O)
